Menopause: What is it?
The menopause is a natural part of ageing that usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age, as a woman’s estrogen levels decline.
Most women will experience menopausal symptoms. Some of these can be quite severe and have a significant impact on your everyday activities. Common symptoms include:
Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex
Low mood or anxiety
Reduced sex drive (libido)
Problems with memory and concentration
Hot flushes and night sweats are a common and uncomfortable symptom of the menopause. There are a few solutions to those hot flushes that seem to start from your toes all the way to the top of your head, like someone set an internal fire. There is evidence to suggest that when you take CBD it interacts with the endocannabinoid system (the internal bodily system), that plays a vital role in regulating body temperature as well as pain function, memory and mood. This said, therefore, hot flushes and night sweats caused by menopause, may be helped by taking CBD.
Sleep and Menopause
Sleep problems during menopause are extremely common – a staggering 60% of women in their late 40’s to early 50’s experience problems with either getting to sleep, or broken sleep patterns, the quality of our sleep plays a huge role in our overall health.
More and more people are reporting to use CBD to aid their sleep, it is theorised that CBD can help to reduce the stress hormone cortisol, which is high in those that suffer with insomnia, showing its potential to aid sleep.
During menopause many people experience racing thoughts and anxiety whilst struggling to get to sleep. The fluctuations in hormones leads to feeling of anxiety which is typically down to large changes in levels of estogen and progesterone. Taking CBD oil before bed has been reported to calm the mind and can improve sleep patterns.
Menopause and Memory
Around the time that women enter menopause, many report experiencing issues with memory and brain fog. As memory issues are more common with age, neuroprotection is a common concern of anyone that’s getting older. The Journal of Neurochemistry has found that CBD is both neuroprotective and an anti-oxidative: protecting your body from damage caused by unstable reactive molecules in your brain and body. The study concluded that CBD use had resulted in a higher rate of cell survival- and whilst more studies are needed, many scientists recognise the great promise of CBD for preventing neurodegeneration.
Research has shown that during the menopause transition the average decrease in bone mineral density is about 10%. Women could be losing around 10-20% within those years which as a result can increase the chances of suffering osteoporosis and bone breakages.
There is current research looking at how CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors which may help to reduce bone density loss, it blocks the receptor that is involved in activation of osteoclasts which are the cells responsible for bone degeneration hence it improves bone mass.
Due to the large range of CBD products currently available on the market, it can feel overwhelming knowing which to choose.
Recent research has demonstrated that transdermal CBD has strong benefits on pain, and so therefore there is evidence to suggest that if you are looking to treat the pain caused by menopause, a CBD patch might be the best option.
For those looking to experience the full effects of CBD and to gain the greatest benefits of the entourage effects (where all the parts of the cannabis plant work together to help maximise the benefits of the CBD oil) a traditional CBD oil would be best.

The Future of CBD and the Menopause
It is clear that CBD could be very beneficial in helping women manage the symptoms caused by menopause. For those who are new to CBD, it may seem like an overwhelming area, in which they know little about.
Studies and research into CBD demonstrate the clear ways in which it can help to lessen pain, reduce anxiety and improve sleep. However, it is important to note that there is no reference to clinical trials on managing menopause with cannabis products. Despite the popular applicability of CBD products in multitude of domains, this topic has received limited research attention.
As and when research continues, there will surely be more data uncovered revealing the ways in which CBD can regulate our internal bodily systems, and how that itself can improve the effects and symptoms of menopause.
